Culture and the Elite Education Forum was held in the Student Activities Center of Northeastern University on August 21 from 1 p.m. Mr. Li Jing, the headmaster of Unibridge International Education, gave a short speech for the event. This event was divided into two parts: a performance of the play “Macbeth” written by William Shakespeare, and an experience sharing session in which some Unibridge alumni talked about their overseas study. 

 

 

Alice Yang and Lucy Luo, who both are Unibridge alumni, took over the role of moderator.

 

Highlights of the Event

UBE Elites Came Back With a Faultless Performance of the Play “Macbeth”!

 

1. The play “Macbeth” was directed by Li Yuzhe, one of Unibridge alumni now studying Natural Sciences in University of Cambridge. The lines were all in English, which assured the performance were emotional, touching and authentic.

2. The performance might stimulate students’ interests in English plays. Parents should encourage their children to taken an active part in this kind of activities which may have a positive effect on both English language learning and self-development in the future.

3. In the experience sharing session, speakers from different perspectives shared their overseas study with the audience.

4. The speech made students and parents in attendance realize the difference between education in China and abroad, as well as the important role of elite education. 

 

 

Most Impressive Scenes in the Play “Macbeth

 

Although the actors were not given enough time for preparation, 

the performance was very much enjoyed by the audience. 

 

 

 

The students contributed to this performance are all UBE alumni.

 

 

 

The girl who played Lady Macbeth won the most applause for her excellent acting.

 

 

“Macbeth” is one of the four great tragedies by William Shakespeare. It tells the story of a brave Scottish general (Macbeth) who receives a prophecy from a trio of sinister witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed with ambitious thoughts and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and seizes the throne for himself. He begins his reign racked with guilt and fear and soon becomes a tyrannical ruler, as he is forced to commit more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion…

Tony Tong

As a math lover, Tony shared his view of information technology in today’s world with the audience. There’s no denying that as technology changes the way we live our day-to-day lives, it also makes changes to the world we live in. When it comes to technology, many tech products come to our minds. Tony’s speech made students in attendance realize the important role information technology is now playing in today’s world.

 

 

Alice Yang

Full scholarship winner of Ellesmere College

Now studying in Ellesmere College

IELTS Band 8

Alice talked about the influence of the expansion of Alibaba and Jingdong on real economy in her speech. Alibaba is now putting the main focus on “new retail” strategy, which aims to seamlessly integrate online and offline shopping, while Jingdong keeps combining the e-commerce with the real economy. Alice impressed the audience with her clear understanding and deep explanation of real economy.

 

 

Emily Wang

Full scholarship winner of Worksop College

Accepted into Oundle School for fall 2016

IELTS Band 7.5

Emily is a girl with a lot of passions. As a sports lover as well as a music lover, she has interests in  skiing, tennis, basketball, and has been playing the piano and drum for years. When it comes to her favourite music artist, she will tell you Troye Sivan is the best. In her speech, she talked about the origin and history of the Olympic Games. Comparing the ancient Olympics to the modern, we can see that clearly things have changed in some respects, but a series of underlying principles and values inherited from Ancient Greece are still central to the modern Olympic spirit. Just as Emily told us, the Olympic spirit is something that requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

 

 

Annie Li

Now studying Natural Sciences in University of Cambridge

IELTS Band 8.5

Showing her great interests in literature and play, besides the play “Macbeth” of this time, Annie had directed the school play “The Three Musketeers” before. As a physics lover, Annie scored full marks in her A-level Physics Exam. So it came as no surprise that the speech given by her was all about quantum mechanics. It is worth mentioning that Annie used humor in her speech, which made such a difficult topic easy to understand. Students in attendance were all amazed by the magic of quantum mechanics.

 

 

Beryl Yan

Full scholarship winner of Durham School

Accepted into Durham School for fall 2016

IELTS Band 7.5 (R-9)

Beryl is a girl obsessed with art. She loves dancing, especially the power jazz and contemporary dance. She loves painting and comic art. She can play the Guzheng, a Chinese plucked string instrument. In her speech, she talked about the difference between eastern and western architecture. Students and parents in attendance were all amazed by the beauty of architectural designs.

 

 

Desmond Dong

Academic scholarship winner of Glenalmond College

Accepted into Glenalmond College for fall 2016

IELTS Band 7 (R-8.5)

As a sports lover, he has interests in sprinting, volleyball, swimming and skiing. In his spare time, he likes to read something about coffee and alcoholic drinks. Besides, he’s also a fan of physics and high-tech weapons. Desmond opened the speech with his view of the high-tech weapons in the 21st century. His detailed explanation made the audience reflect on high-tech weapons, as well as realize the important role high tech is playing in today’s world.

 

 

Students and parents in attendance expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to join the sharing session which made them feel inspired and motivated.
