Culture and the Elite Education Forum 2018, organized by UBE abroad alumni, was held in Shenyang Rich Gate Hotel at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19. Mr. Li Jing, the founder of UBE International Group, made the opening speech with the theme “The Internationalization of Education and Humanistic Education”. Li encouraged all the students in attendance to improve critical thinking, self-expression and writing skills. He pointed out that the improvement of these qualities greatly depended on humanistic education. No matter which field you are interested in, natural sciences or the social sciences, it must be the rich humanistic qualities that guide you to the top.
There are eight keynote speakers in the conference, among which, seven of them are the outstanding students of UBE, who are now studying in the first-class universities in the whole world, including University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, London School of Economics and University of London, and the elite college students in the G5 group. Another special speaker favored by the students as life mentor, has just achieved the Mphil degree in the Faculty of Education of University of Cambridge and has been offered a letter of conditional admission to the PhD program. During the conference, they have presented special sharing on language education and learning, time management, public benefit activities, the comparison between Chinese and Western education, etc.

Speaker: Ted (undergraduate student in Physics)
Topic: Using Reading Materials to Build Vocabulary
The secret of the straight A-students to build up the vocabulary cannot lack reading English books and watch English movies or TV series. We all know this method, but why we achieve little when use it? Ted shares with us that the prerequisite of reading novels, watching TV shows and movies is still the accumulation of the vocabulary, which requires one to read, memorize and dictate more. The efforts on this cannot be saved. Based on mastering the vocabularies, the reading shall be expanded to wider range and the listening as well as reading volume should be improved. Afterwards, the vocabulary volume will be greatly enhanced. At last, insist on doing what is necessary everyday according to your own ability.

Speaker: Jake (undergraduate student in Natural Science)
Topic: How to Improve Your Reading Skills
Jake believes that reading has certain tolerance to the vocabulary. Students may get used to not look up in the vocabularies when running into the new words, which shows an earnest attitude towards learning. However, this often impact the consistency of reading. It is very tired to read an article and the interest in reading will be lowered. Jake advises that we do not need to look up every word in the dictionary during reading, the meaning can be speculated through the word-building and the context. You can skip the unfamiliar word when running into it. Jake also shows us how to guess the meaning, make estimation on the low-frequency word, improve the reading interest and speed. As for the skill to answer the questions, Jake has also shared with us some useful approaches, such as how to locate the key words.

Speaker: Emily (undergraduate student in Economics)
Topic: How to Improve Your Spoken English
Emily believes that “the first impression” of pronunciation is very important, especially, pronounce as accurate as possible for the new word. Also, the key of language learning is to practise more and read loudly more. You can record your reading through the electronic equipment, listen to it repetitively and correct the mistakes. You can also communicate with the fluent speakers, participate in the class participation and English speech contest. Emily used to participate in the national English public speaking competition when she studies in UBE and achieves outstanding result. Meanwhile, she is one of the starters of the elite debate club of UBE, which must be of some help to the improvement of Emily’s spoken English. At last, insist on what you do. Emily believes that “you will make progress if you work hard.”

Speaker: Annie ( master student in Education)
Topic: How to Improve Writing Skills
English writing is a test on the comprehensive ability of English. Annie proposes that there are five aspects when it comes to improving the English writing ability, including vocabulary, grammar, consistency, logical structure and writing style. What should be paid extra attention is that non-subjective statement should be used and do not quote the sayings directly as the supporting viewpoints when writing. Therefore, the arguments should be bottomed on facts. Yet, the famous sayings can be used directly. Speaking of writer, Annie has a lot of experience to share with the students. When studying in UBE, she starts her own creation with her friends, Alice and Christina, who love Harry Potter as much as her. They wrote and finished RIGHTEOUS GIRLStogether. Currently, Annie has also completed her first novel. As the founder of UBE English drama club, she has directed the English dramas including The Three Musketeers and Macbeth, which were shown on the stage with Chinese and foreign students during the summer vacation.

Speaker: Wayne (undergraduate student in Electronic Engineering)
Topic: How to Improve Your Time Management Skills
It is very important to know learn about time management. Children should know how to prioritize and make plans for their study and daily life. The scientific time management will make your task implementation more efficient. Wayne thinks that you must make plans according to your actual condition, such as your short-term plan, long-term plan and the extracurricular activities to balance the timeframe required for each part. Meanwhile, you must set time limit for your plan and follow the arrangement strictly. The short-term plan should have clear schedule and sequence, while the medium-term and long-term plans should have daily or weekly schedule tracking. Wayne also shares with us some detailed implementation methods to improve the time management ability, together with the tips about overcoming the procrastination, so that you never leave today’s work for tomorrow. The students and teachers benefit a lot from the practical sharing, and they make notes on the knowledge.

Speaker: Victor (undergraduate student in Computer Science)
Topic: How to Improve Your Study Skills
In Victor’s perspective, one should not only conduct self-learning for the classroom knowledge, but also should cover the extracurricular knowledge, because extracurricular knowledge will only deepen students’ understanding on the classroom knowledge, moreover, it will provide more opportunities to their future development in various aspects. Of course, one should make reasonable arrangement on their time and prioritization. The extracurricular self-learning can be done according to their own interests to search for the suitable material. In this aspect, he recommends many useful learning websites, such as MOOC China which provides 1422 online courses of the best universities in the whole world, and edX, which is an education platform that provides many free online courses created by MIT and Harvard University. There are a lot of extra websites recommended by Victor, and they will not be detailed illustration here.
07  University College London
Speaker: Lucy (undergraduate student in Social Science)
Topic: Two Months’ Teaching in Thailand
Lucy’s summer vocation is very different. As one of the two member participating in the NGO project in Thailand, she went to the refugee school in the border of Burma to provide education assistance. The condition was very difficult there, and most of the students were the Burma refugees. The children cannot receive high-quality education resources there. It was not a smooth path for Lucy to do a successful trial training and then give lectures to the students. One of the biggest problem was the language barrier. However, after the short run-in period, a rapport relationship was established, and many touching moments were worth memorizing. The children picked Lucy up to school and then sends her back; they plaited here hair and gave her their most precious gifts. The pure and innocent love of the children, the full dedication from the Lucy have touched everyone in the conference. The 9-week teaching life has cultivated Lucy’s character. To Lucy herself, this is also an unforgettable growth process. She has acquired more profound thinking, and her teaching has sowed the seed of hope in the heart of the children in the refugee school.

Speaker: Jane Ji (Ph.D. candidate in Education)
Topic: Develop with Unibridge 
Through the whole journey, Ms. Ji has lead a lot of students to go out of China with her outstanding academic ability and teaching level. She witnesses the growth path of the students, which has countless touching moments and the memory. During the conference, Ms. Ji shares the best wishes and educational thoughts from the students who cannot return to the class.
“English learning is not only to learn from the vocabulary books, but also to give us the ability to ability to live in this world and learn the knowledge, which is of great significance to me. However, this is a process that challenges my patience and the accumulation, which will not get instant results. However, the efforts will not be wasted in the end.”

The audience also felt the power of good examples from the extraordinary UBE alumni. Their unceasing footsteps have provided a lot of encouragements to the students in attendance. As Mrs. Li said in the meeting, “you will never get the diamond if you do not pose pressure on the carbon atom.” In combination of the innovative educational comparison research between the East and the West conducted in the University of Cambridge, Ms. Ji also shared with the audience about the academic attitude and research methodology that should be possessed by the researchers, which make them very refreshing.
At the end of the conference, the host quoted from Ms. Ji about her remark on the “carbon atom”, he said that “pressure is the necessity for the carbon atom to become the diamond, however, this is not the only element needed, temperature and catalyst is also required, and UBE is the catalyst here.”
The 3-hour elaborate sharing have provided great inspiration and achievement to the 300 students and parents in attendance. Under the organization of UBE alumni, the conference is well organized, and the coordination skills also left deep impression of the parents. It was a high-quality exchange conference on education, learning and international development. The Culture and the Elite Education Forum ended successfully.
