SETRA·920丨The 2nd China International Teaching and Research Convention Raised Its Curtain in Dalian

From the 19th to the 20th of September, 2017, the 2nd China International Teaching and Research Convention was held in Dalian World Expo Center. It is launched and organized by ‘SETRA’, a Chinese non-government educational teaching and research institution. It aims to organize and promote the teachers in non-government institutions to learn from each other, to improve teaching quality and to build a platform for developing international communication. 

The convention was divided into five sessions: Development of Teachers and Education, Chinese Teaching, Maths Teaching, English Teaching and Education Leadership. Almost 2000 people attended the convention, including experts, teachers, and scholars from all parts of China, the UK, the United States and other countries. Yongfu Yu, Vice-President of Liaoning Association for Non-Government Education, President of Shenyang Association for Non-Government Education, and Ken Li, Senior Business Development Manager-East Asia of Cambridge English Language Assessment gave the speech. John Li, Executive Director of China Yanhuang Culture Research Association specializing in children enlightenment education, Director of the Professional Committee of Training and Education, China Association for Non-Government Education, Founder of Unibridge International Education Group, made a speech on behalf of the host. Furthermore, about 50 experts or educators gave lectures to share their ideas, including: Changhe Chen, Deputy Dean of Beijing Huayue Education Research Institute, who participated in amending the new Law on the Promotion of Non-Government Education; the related officers of Shenyang and Dalian Association for Non-Government Education and the Department of Non-Government Education Management, Education Bureau; Jane Ji, famous English educator, initiator of SETRA (Senior Education Teaching and Research Academy); Yongchang Yu, famous educational specialist and expert teacher; Dr. Jing Li, English teaching researcher of Liaoning Research and Training Center for Basic Education; Dr. Xuyang Feng, Founder of free sinology lectures for the public; Lawrence J. Zwier, Associate Director for Curriculum and Instruction at the College and Letters, Michigan State University; Steve Brent, the cooperator and ex-CEO of IH London - a teacher licensing institution recognized by the Cambridge English Language Assessment; Dominique Vouillemin, Teacher Trainer from IH London; Jeffrey L. Chandler, Educational Consultant of COBB County School District in Georgia, Teacher Trainer of Georgia Department of Education; Nick Pettingale, Fellow of the Institute of Development Professionals in Education, Deputy Head of Ellesmere College, UK; Jonathan Whitehouse, Director of Alpha Plus Group (Asia); Honours degree from the University of Oxford, Qualified Cambridge IELTS Speaking Examiner, and so on.

Jane Ji, an MPhil at the University of Cambridge, shared her experience under the title From Unibridge to Cambridge at the convention. During more than ten years’ teaching in the field of non-government education, she has devoted herself to education and her students, desiring to explore advanced English teaching and research. Groups of her students have been admitted to the top universities in the world. Five of her students received the offers from the University of Cambridge in the year of 2017. She not only does a good job in teaching, but also leads non-government English teacher to promote teaching and research in China and opens up the access to international teaching and research. It is her persevering enterprising spirit that has impressed everyone at the convention.

The various speeches covering advanced education ideas on the convention were highly acclaimed, such as: exploration into children’s creative reading and writing from Zizi Ye, a Wuhan famous writer who is active in children’s education, Internet and also camps and outdoor education; the studies of Chinese ancient civilization in combination with contemporary Chinese teaching by Xianping Wang, Founder of Xianping Sinology Academy; poetic imagery and writing from Jinning Cai, Head of Sinology Department in SETRA; carrying on critical thinking on class   for humanistic and formative education by Haiming Li, Chinese teaching of Unibridge International Education; maths teaching revolution under the background of exam-oriented educaton from both Yongchang Yu, famous educational specialist and Haimei Li, maths teacher; take the lead to gain trust even without a word by Lu Gao, founder of Dunhua Chunhua English Language Training School; family education from Limei Kang, Distinguished Family Education expert of Committee for Caring Next Generation and Young Writers Association of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region; three tips for maths teachers of training institution from Rui Jia, distinguished maths teacher of non-government Education in Hohhot who gives more than 100 public lectures about education each year; the growth and experience of an excellent principal by Fusheng Lyu, Chairman of Sunshine Education in Heilongjiang Province, and others.

The Chinese non-government education is meeting its crucial moment of education reform. The new revised Law on the Promotion of Private Education came into effect on September 1st, 2017. The Management model of Chinese non-government education will have a change. However, the promotion of non-government education is not just reflected in the model of management, but also in the quality of teaching. Therefore, it is an immense power to promote the implementation of the Law on the Promotion of Private Education by improving the quality of teaching and research of non-government education continuously. Many famous teachers and experts from China and abroad gathered at the convention to present and share experience to each other, which shows its vitality and passion of non-government education. Furthermore, this convention is also a valuable gift to the 33rd Teachers’ Day in China.
